Fishy tail

Having seen pictures in the newspapers of the fishing harbour at a place called Malpe we felt it was certainly worth a visit especially as we were passing on route.
What a place. There were prob a 1000 boats in the harbour. Like a big jigsaw they all fitted in as far as the eye could see creating a spectacular sight of flags, colour and activity. Many men sat under huge sun canopies mending holes in nets using all fingers and toes. Yards and yards of brightly coloured nets with again highly coloured weights and floats all lying out in some sort of system  awaiting attention.
Huge lorries parked by boats with a dozen workers standing on the top feeding nets from others on the ships.
Lorries of ground ice waiting to either go onboard ships or waiting for fish to be unloaded.
In the actual fish market ladies in saris carried baskets of fish transporting to the buyer or lorry. Men stood bidding for crates of assorted fish. Teams of people carting crates on their heads headed from the ships.
Groups of brightly dressed ladies were sitting on the wet ground shelling thousands of prawns in batches of 6 or more at unbelievable speed. They invited us to join them but my attempt was laughed at being I was so slow. All taken in good spirit and the even gave me a bottle water to wash my hands.
Fishermen were sitting crossed legged on nets in their ships grabbing a plate of food all eaten with fingers.
Ships and people being washed down with hoses and above our heads hundreds of Hawks including Sea Eagles and Kites waiting for possibility of a morsel.
What was unbelievable was that there was not a smell of fish and we thought every thing was tidy that was till we saw rubbish being thrown into drains that led to the sea 😡. But hey that will take a long time to educate and this is what they have done for years sad to say.
One sad thing that the reason they were in the news is that a deep sea fishing ship has been lost recently with 7 on board and their comrades were protesting at the lack of response from the government to find them. Sad end to the story especially as they lead a very hard life and that brings home the dangers of trying to making a living out at sea with poor equipment and facilities. As Keith pointed out no life saving boats etc.   😟
